MRAG has been working with the Government of Uganda to develop a strategy to reduce the impacts of HIV/AIDS on fishing communities.
The livelihoods of fishing communities are characterised by uncertainty and fishermen are considered to be a high-risk group for contracting HIV. They are also less able to cope with AIDS owing to the distances to heath centres and a lack of HIV/AIDS support services.
A situation analysis was carried out by MRAG and Options Ltd in 2004 to assess the impact of HIV/AIDS on fishing communities. It found prevalence rates in fishing communities to be up to three times than the national average. It also revealed a situation where the living and working conditions in fishing communities contributes to the spread of HIV. Many fishers live away from home, earn daily cash income but have no saving facilities.
Based on the findings of the situation analysis, MRAG and Options Ltd supported the Department of Fisheries to develop a Strategy to reduce the impacts of HIV/AIDS on fishing communities. This is now being developed into an implementation plan in consultation with partners at the national and district level.
MRAG has also supported DFR to produce a series of summary documents to help raise awareness of the issues and the strategy to address the problems.
